A door is more than a hinged wooden panel with a doorknob to swing it open. If you’re putting a door in a prime spot, like the entrance to your bedroom or the front of your shop, it could be useful to know some options to make it just the right door for you. The parts of a door can be highly customized.
Doorknobs and Levers
The doorknob has many varieties and is becoming more popular because it does look attractive. A doorknob can really improve the look of an old door.
Doorknobs can be made from brass, stainless steel, wood, plastic, glass, ceramic and various metals. For a bedroom, you could have a matching drawer, wardrobe and doorknobs.
Most homes and offices today use levers in place of knobs. Levers are more user-friendly and accessible. They just need to be pushed down and forward, unlike a doorknob which needs to be rotated before pushing the door open.

If there’s a door that needs only to be pushed and doesn’t require any locking, you might as well use a push plate. It’s no surprise push plates are standard in hospitals, where emergencies require doors to be opened with zero hassle.

Another useful add-on is a door closer. A door closer is usually installed at the top corner of the door, opposite the handle side.
Closers are installed to prevent a door from closing loudly and abruptly. A closer will slow a door’s return swing down after it’s been released so that it doesn’t move too fast and slam into the door jamb.

A lot of closers even have a hold-open function. This means you can open a door and make it lock it in place. This is perfect for guest rooms and parties when there are a lot of people going back and forth!

Finally, consider the type of finish a door accessory is going to have: mirror, satin, or semigloss. A mirror finish on a door lever means it will be extra shiny and reflective, which is perfect if you want it to stand out.
Opposite the mirror finish is the satin or stainless steel finish, which is subdued and conveys a more solemn, professional tone. Right in the middle, the semigloss finish strikes a balance between mirror and satin if you want a bit of each.
